The way I manage the iPads is through Appointment Slots. Teachers click on a iPad photo and are taken to a page they can sign up for pre-selected appointment slots.
You can see this in action at http://herbertschenk.info/. Click on the iPad to see the appointment slots. The appointments slots add times to both the ipad calendar and the teacher's individual calendar.
